In this photograph of Vancouver’s famous Lions mountain range, I wanted to emphasize the closeness and detail that can sometimes get lost in wide-angle landscape photography. By using an extreme telephoto lens, I was able to compress the distance, drawing both the mountains and the forest into a single, cohesive frame. The telephoto’s reach creates a powerful sense of intimacy, almost as if you’re standing right there in the midst of the mountains, with the mist rolling off the peaks in the background.
Telephoto lenses are often overlooked in landscape photography, where wide-angle lenses tend to be the go-to tool for capturing vast, sweeping scenes. However, telephoto lenses offer a unique perspective by isolating and magnifying specific elements within a larger scene. This technique allows for a more focused, detailed portrayal of nature, bringing out textures, contrasts, and depth that might otherwise go unnoticed.
