Swans on the Lost Lagoon

Yesterday as I was finishing my walk and coming around the Lost Lagoon I spotted a pair of nesting Swans. This is not all that uncommon because there are several swans in the lost lagoon and the nest every year. The Vancouver Parks Board even sets up temporary fencing to protect the and give them a bit of space.

The Mute Swans have been in the park since 1890 and were a gift from England. They are not a native bird to anywhere in North America. To keep them in the lagoon their wings have been clipped. From time to time I have seen one making a break for it and managed to get out as far as a swim in English Bay.
